Tour of Hilton Head Island

Join us for a delightful tour of Hilton Head Island and its rich history. In 1663 an Englishman, captain William Hilton, arrived looking for a place to plant sugar cane and indigo and claimed the island for the British crown. Hilton Head soon thrived as landowners established plantations of these crops and cotton.

In 1861 Hilton Head Island was overrun by Union army troops and many of the residents fled, to be replaced by escaped slaves as well as the Union troops and their Confederate prisoners. After the civil war the boll weevil destroyed the cotton crop and Hilton Head was all but abandoned. A few remaining former slaves and their descendants, stayed and survived by farming and fishing. These residents were so isolated from the mainland they developed their own language and culture based on their African heritage. Today these people and their language are known as ''Gullah" and they are widely regarded as ''native" islanders.

In the 1940’s the lumbering industry began to grow on the Island. Electricity was brought to the island, in 1950. This paved the way to development of the island as a tourist destination.

In 1956 a bridge was built connecting the island to the mainland. At that same time, a visionary young developer, son of a family who owned most of the land on the southern end of the island, conceived a resort community that would blend with the natural beauty and ecology of the island. Charles Fraser's resulting Sea Pines Plantation resort has become a model for resorts world wide that focus on the preservation of nature and the blending of structures with the environment.

Our final stop will be in Harbour Town. This picturesque Marina is reminiscent of a Mediterranean seaside village, home of the famous candy-striped lighthouse. Guests can enjoy a walk out on the pier, visit the many unique boutiques and restaurants, or enjoy a panoramic view from the top of the Harbour Town Lighthouse.

Tour of Historic Beaufort, SC

The "Queen of the Carolina Sea Islands" is Beaufort, South Carolina. Beaufort SC history reaches back to the 1600's, when Barbadian planters, English indentured servants, and religious dissenters arrived to seek new lives.

The "Beaufort style" of architecture is a unique one, which incorporates elements of Georgian and Colonial styles, as well as those of Greek Revival and semitropical Spanish. Designed for airiness and coolness, the Beaufort-style homes resemble plantation homes brought to town (as some indeed were), that were adapted to tolerate the summer heat and dampness of the Lowcountry.

St. Helena's Episcopal Church, a famous Beaufort landmark was built in 1724 and surrounded by grounds which speak of the parish's 283 years of history. During the War Between the States, Federal troops dismantled the church to use it as a hospital, even uprooting graveyard slabs for operating tables. The John Mark Verdier House built in 1801 in the Federal style, also survived occupation by Union forces. So, enjoy a tour of the low country so you can see Beaufort’s charms for yourself.
